VISION CARE TERMS DEFINED

What is an Ophthalmologist?
An opththalmologist is a Medical Doctor (MD) who specializes in the structure, functions and diseases of the eye.  As physicians, these practitioners may examine the eye for refractive errors or physiological conditions, perform surgery or prescribe drugs to treat patients.  In addition to prescribing and dispensing eyeglasses or contact lenses, they may also perform elective procedures such as LASIK to correct a patient's vision.
What is an Optometrist?
As a Doctor of Optometry, this vision care professional examines the eye for refractive errors and may prescribe and dispense eyeglasses or contact lenses to correct vision.   Depending on the extent of training, these eye doctors may also be licensed to prescribe ocular exercises or topical drugs to treat patients.

What is an Optician?
An optician or Ophthalmic Dispenser is licensed or qualified to supply and fit eyeglasses as well as deal in various optical items and instruments. Opticians read prescriptions for visual correction written by eye doctors and then may fill the script by either using frames and lenses to fabricate eyeglasses or by ordering the prescribed contact lenses.
What is LASIK Surgery?
Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is currently the most effective surgical method used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.  This procedure is usually performed by specially trained ophthalmologists and has permanently eliminated the need for corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses for many thousands of patients throughout the world.
